Lower Waste Back to School

Lower Waste Back to School

Reducing waste is crucial for back to school because it helps protect the environment and teaches students valuable lessons about sustainability. By implementing waste reduction strategies, we can minimize the negative impact on our planet and create a healthier future for the next generation. Read on for three easy ideas to have a low-waste school year.

Three Ways to Reduce Back-to-School Waste

1. Choose Eco-Friendly School Supplies

Going to Target or any big-box store this time of year can feel overwhelming; the sheer number of supplies put in front of us is colossal! But do our students truly need all of these items? Before buying everything they *might* need, poke through your supply shelf/bin/cupboard. What do you already have? What will they be provided with at school? Even though it’s hard- at least it is for me!- wait until that Supply List from the teacher is in your hand before you purchase. When we avoid purchasing excessive amounts of supplies, we reduce our family’s waste and save some cash. I love that for us.

When you are ready to buy those needed items, opt for eco-friendly school supplies such as recycled paper, refillable pens, and pencils made from sustainable materials. Like these- so fun! This also helps teach the kids the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling materials whenever possible.

2. Pack a Waste-Free Lunch

Encourage your child to bring a waste-free lunch to school by using reusable containers and water bottles.  Chances are you already have a few insulated lunch boxes, water bottles, and reusable food storage containers around the house, so use what you have! To help avoid the very handy but not awesome single use zip bag, we are big fans of Stasher bags. They are colorful, easy to use, and come in lots of fun colors (which in my experience often translates to “Hey kid, don’t throw this away”).  By packing a lower waste lunch, you not only reduce waste but also save money in the long run. Win-win!

3. Shop Local, Lower Waste + Sustainable Brands

When shopping for back to school personal care products such as mini-sized lotion, deodorant, lip balm, and hand sanitizer, choose brands that prioritize sustainability. Look for companies (like LB Love Organics) that are eco-friendly,  use recyclable or refillable packaging, and source their ingredients responsibly. By supporting these brands, you're not only taking care of your children's skin but also supporting a greener future.

LB Love Organics offers plastic free lip balm, deodorant, and hard lotion bars that are an excellent low waste option for folks with sensitive skin. We also love our refillable hand sanitizer sprays in a 2 ounce spray bottle and an 8 ounce refill size. Because students are germy.

LB Love Organics specializes in sensitive skin care with a mind for reducing waste, so we see you, and we want to help! All LB Love Organics products use simple and organic ingredient lists that are short in length, but long in benefits.

By following these three main ideas, we can make a positive impact on the environment and instill eco-conscious habits in our families. Let's work together to reduce waste for a greener back-to-school season!
